In the last few years, and specially after the riots in june 2013, a big social movement wants to say no to the world cup in Brazil. In a country know as the “Country of football” this seems surprising, but the re-arrangement of the cities to enter in the model wanted by the FIFA and a “touristic model” made the poor people even more excluded, cause of that many riot movements happened in the country in these last few years. These movements only got visibility in the international media when in june 2013 massive riots exploded in the whole country.

In spite of the image the Brazilian government tries to create of a country that is economically successful and incredible growing, the social gap between classes is still really big. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil are one of the visible results of this economical success for the government. So, the authorities really try to create an image of a country that is modern, where the quality of life grows, and where there’s a kind of “social peace”. The poorest populations pay the price of this image. As a result of these mega-events, the cities are being cleansed, the poor neighborhoods are being pacified (which means they are put under military control), many poor neighborhoods have been destroyed and the people put far away from the city centers, the gentrification increases and the prices in the big cities get extremely highs. This social context leads to a general popular dissatisfaction and the people rise up. This revolt is violently repressed by the authorities.

What’s the answer of the government for the riot movements?

Specially after the last year, the police violently repress the demonstrations, with the usual arms (like tear gas, sound bombs, flash balls…) and sometimes real bullets. Mass arrests are also one of it’s tactics. The big medias help the police showing an image of the demonstrators as violent and dangerous people. Many people arrested during this period were already charged by the National Security Laws (that exist since the military dictatorship and are also anti-terrorists) and laws against the “organized crime”. These are the arms the repression has been using till now.

At this moment, the Brazilian parliament is running to vote new anti-terrorists laws before the world cup. After these new laws it will be possible to define the demonstrations as terrorists acts. These laws also want to create a new charge for “attempt to material things”, that could give up to 20 years in prison. Beyond the demonstrations, a big part of the poor people from the big cities is constantly repressed by the police cause of the simple fact of being black, poor and live inside a favela. This happens even more during international mega-events. Facing all this, the brazilian movements against the world cup are tying to get prepared to the repression during the world cup.

What’s the Anarchist Black Cross of Rio de Janeiro?

The Anarchist Black Cross Rio de Janeiro is an autonomous solidarity group against repression. The ABC Rio de Janeiro was formed in november 2013 to give financial support to the people in prison after the riots in june 2013 and the teachers strike in october 2013. This group is now trying to raise money to use against the repression during the World Cup. In general the ABC Rio de Janeiro wants to support not only the people considered as “political prisoners”, but every prisoner.

I receive and transmit the editorial of the Anarchist Black Cross newsletter, which will be presented on 25th April at the Bencivenga Squat in Rome. Besides spreading letters from prisoners and claims of attacks, counter-information should propose analysis, be it from the internet or on paper. I’m sorry I don’t agree with some passages of this editorial, when the comrades probably talk without having a direct experience of counter-information via web. Most importantly, there exist no virtual worlds but comrades who meet in person and organize initiatives all over the world. But I’m happy about this new Anarchist Black Cross bulletin, especially as there’s always the need of analysis on paper:

Fires of revolt continue to brighten the darkness of a world otherwise destined to annihilate the individual and lead him/her to homogenized slavery: these pages aim at stoking the fire and lighting more of them.

One of the few advantages offered by the obsessive search for global information is the revelation that even on the other side of the world there are hearts beating at the same rhythm as ours, hearts which arm skilled hands skilled in doing much more than typing a keyboard. The race to the abyss carried out by technological society is getting increasingly frantic, but fighters all over the world are keeping the pace; and even if they risk of being crashed by such a gigantic monster, they are struggling against it so as to make it fall down. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and do more.

Armed with this tension we decided to give birth to a new Anarchist Black Cross. We are setting off along this path knowing that we live in a time when the price of choosing to spread certain ideas and practices is becoming very high, but we’ve always maintained that resignation is complicity with the system; and even if we are not among those who think that ‘a pen is as good as a rifle’, it is by now obvious to us that even within the so-called anarchist movement an intolerable homogeneity in thinking has come to light, and the resulting practices seem to be the result of a downward game; and it is therefore imperative to make other voices be heard again. We want to break the deafening silence of the last years, knowing that certain voices – including ours – haven’t been heard for too long a time.

This new Black Cross has the precise goal of becoming a gym of ideas having in common the consolidation of destructive practices: the mere use of the definition ‘direct action’ is no longer sufficient, as it seems having taken the meaning of ‘everything and the opposite of everything’… Of course we are going to give more and more space to the contributions given by the comrades who ended up in the traps of repression, without reducing ourselves to a sort of repainted red cross, but rather supporting the continuation of their trajectory of struggle in all possible ways.

The aim of our project, which will never take the colours of mere aid, is to re-launch certain ideas and correlated practices.

Starting from this premise we hope a real discussion will ensue, one which is not a miserable taking of sides but one which is so alive that it becomes conflict, because we are tired of the warm and hypocritical ‘everything is fine’.

We decided to make a publication on paper, more accessible and lasting than the speedy running of the web; but we are keeping our blog as a more rapid instrument to spread news and communiqués on action and repression. We think that the choice of a paper is not a sterile and nostalgic fetish; on the contrary we are convinced that one can’t continue to complain about the destructive damage made by technological society and ignore the fact that even we anarchists let ourselves be reduced to simple ‘users’ of an increasingly virtual world where even the struggle falls into the idiotic mechanism of being ‘more successful’ according to the number of ‘likes’ it gets…

Moreover we want to recreate a physical place where we can meet new accomplices. We expect to receive many contributions, even including criticism, and we’ll do our best to create occasions for presenting the newsletter, and finally make it possible to look into each other’s eyes again while talking to each other about what is still our more ardent desire: the destruction of the existent that annihilates us and the joy of contributing to make it collapse in debris.

While writing, Jock Palfreeman is already more then 5 years imprisoned in Sofia, Bulgaria for aiding two young Romani-boys when they were under attack from a group of right-wing hooligans. Palfreeman came into a fight with the group of fascists and two of his attackers got injured of whom one died later from his injuries.

We start this campaign because, next to the just move of Palfreeman to act, his court case was a total fraud in which he got convicted to 20 years of imprisonment. While in prison his treatment is worsening. One of the reasons for this is his support for other prisoners through the by him co-founded Bulgarian Prisoners Association. In the beginning of 2013 this was reason for depriving him from his right to finish his study in prison by the prison authorities.

In reaction to this Palfreeman started a hunger strike. A few months later (October 2013) there was another incident in which he and fellow prisoners were subjected to severe beatings by prison guards.

Meanwhile the Bulgarian state upholds a pretty picture about human rights, tolerance and its fight against xenophobia¹. Through this the Bulgarian government is trying to present itself as a fitting partner of the o-so-tolerant bourgeois European Union. This same state is keeping Jock Palfreeman imprisoned while he stood up against a form of injustice that everyone should act against.

Everywhere in Europe we see an increase of right-wing and xenophobic ideas. On the wind of the social crisis and in the name of ‘freedom’ and as false saviors of ‘the people’, they are surfing as vultures around the rotting corpse of the capitalist bourgeois democracy. From Poland to Spain, from the Ukraine to Greece they try to win the inhabitants – terrorized by budget cuts and driven into disparity by social demolition by the IMF, the ECB and the EU – for their ideas. They try to put the crisis on scapegoats. Scapegoats like homosexuals, Jews and in many Eastern-European countries the Romani-communities² . This while this specific group is often already living in harsh economic circumstances. It is in this light Jock acted.

There are, when analyzing such mechanics, many complex matters at work. A large part of the Eastern-European countries feels itself – understandably – for years discriminated and neglected. This region is dealing with a torn history of communist dictatorship and after that the trampling by capitalist elites, both ‘pro-Russian’ and ‘pro-European’. Meanwhile there has been a certain racism from West to East. The origins of the social and economic problems these fascist movements point out are disturbing and make clear all the more where the neglecting of an unprocessed history and a tormented past can lead to.

The antifascist struggle and the struggle for a social revolution together are the only path out towards true freedom for all peoples. In the struggle for social justice for everyone it is for its utmost importance to take a firm stance against all forms of discrimination. This way we can prevent, from West to East and also internally, that innocent minorities get the blame on base of their ethnicity, sexuality, social-economic position while we unmask and fight against the true origins of the problem: the international system of nationalism and capitalism; divide and conquer. The people in the front-lines of these struggle need our support.

We designed a poster (in English) to get international attention for the case of Jock Palfreeman and his current situation. This poster is currently being spread widely in Europe (Germany, Austria, Czech, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia). The poster is not only meant to inform the public but also to pressure the Bulgarian state. The Bulgarian state is currently vulnerable because of the attention it receives for the expiration of the need to have a visa in the EU for people with a Bulgarian passport. The Bulgarian state hopes when this works out well it can enter the EU-schengen-zone³.

Next to spreading information through the internet and via posters in the public space, we therefore also call for actions to put up the pressure against the Bulgarian government. They are thus far ignoring and frustrating the release of Palfreeman. Next to the pressure on the government for Palfreeman’s release this can also give him some new hope.

We ask to write the Bulgarian embassies with the demand for the release of Jock Palfreeman, send along posters to make clear the story is on the streets. This is not because we are seeing the Bulgarian state as a legit entity but they are the ones who keep Palfreeman hostage.

Terwijl wij dit schrijven zit Jock Palfreeman inmiddels al meer dan 5 jaar gevangen in Sofia (Bulgarije) voor het helpen van twee Roma-jongens die werden aangevallen door een groep extreemrechtse hooligans. Palfreeman raakte hierop in een gevecht met de groep fascisten en twee van zijn belagers raakten gewond. Één van hen overleed later aan zijn verwondingen.

Wij zijn overgegaan tot het steunen van Palfreeman omdat, naast dat hij rechtmatig handelde door in te grijpen, zijn rechtszaak een regelrechte farce was waarbij hij veroordeeld is tot een celstraf van 20 jaar. Hij wordt steeds slechter behandeld tijdens zijn gevangenschap. Dit onder andere door zijn steun aan andere gevangenen, via de mede door hem opgerichte Bulgarian Prisoner’s Association. Begin 2013 werd zijn recht op het afronden van zijn in de gevangenis hem ontnomen door het gevangenisregime.

In reactie hierop ging hij begin 2013 een maand in hongerstaking. Een aantal maanden later (oktober 2013) volgde weer een incident, waarbij hij en medegevangenen in elkaar geslagen werden door gevangenisbewakers.

Ondertussen houdt de Bulgaarse staat ons een mooi beeld voor van mensenrechten, tolerantie en haar strijd tegen xenofobie¹. Hiermee probeert de Bulgaarse overheid zich te presenteren als een gepaste deelnemer aan de o-zo-tolerante, burgerlijke Europese Unie. Diezelfde staat houdt echter Jock Palfreeman opgesloten terwijl hij opstond tegen een vorm van onrecht waar iedereen tegen zou moeten optreden.

Overal in Europa zien we een opkomst van extreemrechts en xenofoob gedachtegoed. In naam van de ‘vrijheid’ en als valse redders van het ‘volk’ cirkelen zij als aasgieren op de wind van de sociale crisis rond het rottende lijk van de kapitalistische kleinburgerlijke democratie. Van Polen tot Spanje en Oekraïne tot Griekenland proberen zij inwoners – geterroriseerd door bezuinigingen en tot wanhoop gedreven door de sociale afbraak van het IMF, ECB en de EU – voor hun ideeën te winnen. Zij proberen de oorzaak van de crisis af te schuiven op de zondebokken. Deze zondebokken zijn, naast homoseksuelen en Joden, in veel Oost-Europese landen de Roma-gemeenschappen. Dit terwijl deze groep zich vaak al in economisch barre omstandigheden bevind. Het is in dit licht dat Jock Palfreeman handelde.

Er spelen in deze kwestie ingewikkelde zaken door elkaar heen. Een groot deel van de bevolkingen in Oost-Europese landen voelt zich – begrijpelijk – al jaren lang gediscrimineerd en niet gehoord. De regio kampt met een verscheurde geschiedenis van communistische dictatuur en de daarop volgende vertrapping door kapitalistische elites, zowel ‘pro-Russische’ als ‘pro-Europese’. En ondertussen heeft er de afgelopen decennia een zeker racisme van West naar Oost plaatsgevonden. De door deze rechtse stromingen aangewezen oorzaken van de sociale en economische problemen zijn verontrustend en maken duidelijk waar de verwaarlozing van een onverwerkte geschiedenis en een gekweld heden toe kunnen leiden.

De antifascistische strijd en de strijd voor een sociale revolutie vormen samen de enige weg tot werkelijke vrijheid voor alle volkeren . In de strijd voor sociale gerechtigheid voor iedereen is het van groots belang een krachtig standpunt in te nemen tegen de discriminatie in al haar vormen. Op die manier kunnen we van West naar Oost en intern in samenlevingen zorgen dat onschuldige minderheden op hand van etniciteit, seksuele voorkeur of sociaal economische positie niet de schuld in de schoenen geschoven krijgen. Daarnaast kunnen we de werkelijke oorzaak van het probleem ontmaskeren: het internationale systeem van nationalisme en kapitalisme; verdeel en heers. De mensen die zich in deze strijd in de frontlinies bevinden hebben steun nodig.

We hebben een poster ontworpen (in het Engels) om internationaal aandacht te vragen voor Jock Palfreemans verhaal en zijn situatie. Deze wordt op het moment wijd verspreid in Europa (Duitsland, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, Tsjechië, Polen, Finland, Zweden, Noorwegen, Denemarken, Nederland, België, Frankrijk, Spanje, Italië, Servië, Griekenland etc.). De poster is echter niet alleen om het publiek te informeren, maar ook om de druk op de Bulgaarse staat op te voeren. De Bulgaarse staat is momenteel kwetsbaar omdat deze momenteel veel aandacht ontvangt vanwege het verval van de visumplicht voor mensen met een Bulgaars paspoort en de wil van de Bulgaarse staat tot de toetreding tot de EU-schengen–zone².

Naast het verspreiden van informatie via internet en posters in de publieke ruimte, roepen we daarom ook op om met acties de druk op te voeren tegen de Bulgaarse overheid die tot dusver de vrijlating van Palfreeman heeft genegeerd en gedwarsboomd. Naast de pressie voor de vrijlating kan dit, misschien nog belangrijker, ook een sprank nieuwe hoop voor Palfreeman zelf betekenen.

Wij vragen om de Bulgaarse ambassades te schrijven met de eis Jock Palfreeman vrij te laten, posters mee te sturen en duidelijk te maken dat het verhaal op straat te vinden zal zijn. Jock heeft hier zelf om gevraagd. Dit is niet omdat we het instituut van de Bulgaarse staat erkennen als rechtmatig, maar zij zijn diegene die Palfreeman gegijzeld houden.

Als je als individu of groep dit initiatief wilt ondersteunen kun je mailen naar de AGN. We kunnen de posters toesturen, een PDF of webversie digitaal toesturen of wellicht wil je op een andere manier helpen. Ook willen we vragen of om je eigen netwerk te spreken om dit initiatief te steunen zodat we een wijdverspreid effect kunnen hebben.

Vrijheid voor Jock Palfreeman en zijn medegevangenen!

In solidariteit met de Transgender Day of Remembrance, een jaarlijkse gedenkdag op 20 november voor trans-identificerende en gender-variant individuelen die vermoord zijn door haat, transfobia en onze strikte gehechtheid aan een binair gender idee, schrijven we op 27 november naar twee transgender gevangenen, namelijk Cece en Chelsea.

Anarchist Black Cross (ABC) Nijmegen is onderdeel van het wereldwijde ABC netwerk dat zich inzet voor politieke, en met name anarchistische, gevangenen. ABC Nijmegen steunt alle gevangenen die volgens ons streven naar een socialere en gelijkwaardigere wereld, waaronder ook gevangenen die ‘schuldig’ zijn bevonden of die ‘geweld’ hebben gebruikt. ABC Nijmegen zet zich zowel praktisch als theoretisch in om een kleine stap te zetten richting de afbraak van het straf- en gevangenissysteem. Zo organiseren we bijvoorbeeld elke 4e woensdag van de maand een gevangenenschrijfavond.

Cece liep op 5 juni 2011 samen met enkele LGBTIQ vrienden op straat en werden door een groep oudere en blanke mensen racistisch en transfobisch uitgescholden. Toen Cece naar hen toe liep en hen duidelijk maakte dat dit soort haatdragende taal niet getolereerd wordt sloeg één van de mensen uit de groep een glas in haar gezicht kapot, waarbij Ceces wang geheel doorboord werd. Bij het gevecht dat toen losbrak werd één van de aanvallers neergestoken en overleed hieraan. De enige persoon die werd opgepakt bij dit gevecht was Cece en zij werd vervolgens aangeklaagd voor moord. Op 4 juni 2012 werd Cece uiteindelijk, na een zeer heftig proces, veroordeeld tot 41 maanden cel voor doodslag. Voor meer informatie over Cece kijk op: supportcece.wordpress.com.

Chelsea is een 25 jaar oude militaire intelligentie analiste die onder andere een video van het vermoorden van ongewapende burgers en journalisten door een US Army helikopter in Irak naar buiten bracht via de klokkenluiderswebsite Wikileaks. Daarnaast deelde ze allerlei documenten gelinkt aan de illegale daden van het Amerikaanse leger in de oorlog in Afghanistan en Irak: zij meent dat deze documenten een paar van de meest belangrijke documenten van onze moderne geschiedenis zijn. Op 30 juli 2013 werd zij veroordeeld tot maar liefst 35 jaar cel, onder andere voor spionage. Nadat zij veroordeeld was kwam Chelsea naar buiten als transgender vrouw en loopt zij gevaar, evenals Cece, nu ze jaren lang gevangen zal zitten in een omgeving die vijandig is naar trans en queer mensen. Anarchist Black Cross (ABC) Nijmegen is part of the worldwide ABC-network that fights and supports political, and mostly anarchist, prisoners. ABC Nijmegen supports all prisoners who according to us fight for a more social and equal world, which also includes prisoners who were found ‘guilty’ or used ‘violence’. ABC Nijmegen tries to take a small step, practically and theoretically, towards the destruction of the punishment- and prison system. For example, we organize writing evenings for prisoners on every 4^th Wednesday of the month and on the 27^th of November 2013 we will write to Cece and Chelsea.

In solidarity with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a memorial on the 20^th of November to trans-identified and gender variant individuals who are murdered each year due to hate, transphobia and our strict adherence to the gender binary, we will write two transgender prisoners in November. On the 5^th of June 2011 Cece walked on the street with some of her LGBTIQ friends when a group of older and white people yelled racist and transphobic slogans at them. When Cece walked up to the group and made them clear that hate speech can’t be tolerated one of the person of the group smashed a glass in her face which punctured Cece’s cheek. During the fight that broke lose one of the person of the group was stabbed and died after this. The only person who got arrested because of this fight was Cece and she was charged with murder. On the 4^th of June 2012, after a very long and difficult proces, Cece got sentenced for manslaughter and has to serve 41 months in jail. Chelsea is a 25 year old military intelligence analyst who released a collateral murder video of the murdering of unarmed civilians and journalist by a US Army helicopter in Iraq on the anti-secrecy website Wikileaks. She also released several documents which show the illegal actions of the American army in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq: she stated that these documents are some of the most important document of our contemporary history. On the 30^th of July 2013 she was sentenced to an incredible 35 years in jail, one of the charges was espionage. After she was sentenced Chelsea came out as a transgender woman and now, just like Cece, she faces years of imprisonment in an environment hostile and dangerous to queer and trans people. Statement from the Cleveland 4 Support Committee on the Sentencing of Joshua (‘Skelly’) Stafford:

You don’t offer a dangerous terrorist a plea deal for three years.

That was the deal the government offered Joshua Stafford, the deal that he left on the table when he chose a trial where he hoped to present evidence of his innocence against charges that carried a minimum of thirty years. It takes a great deal of courage to stand up against a prosecution that badly wishes you and your case would just go away quietly. Most people would be bullied by the threat of the long decades ahead, and go on to take the deal. Whatever his sentence today, Josh will have already served nearly a year and a half of it.

Whatever his sentence today, Josh will have had an insufficient chance to present his side of the case. Those who witnessed his trial are already aware that it played out as a farce, in which he was derailed from every attempt to explain the circumstances and the events that led up to his arrest on April 30, 2012. Those in the courtroom may not have been aware that they were witnessing the height of hypocrisy. A prosecution that would have been happy to settle for a three year sentence just the day before trial presented the scant evidence they had of his involvement while painting him as a person far too dangerous to let back out on the streets.

Thus, the jury convicted him without a chance to understand why a young man whose fast metabolism gave him his nickname ‘Skelly’ got in a car with his friends and their boss: an empty stomach and the offer of dinner at Applebee’s. They only saw Josh stumbling as best he could through the legal system as his prosecution laid every well-crafted brick stacked against him neatly. They never heard that they were deciding the fate of a young man who has never had much in his life but has always been willing to share what he had; a young man who never hesitated to help a friend.

For the Cleveland 4 Support Committee and for all those who support political prisoners an important question remains: What are WE going to do? It is time to shine a very bright light on the methods used by FBI agents and prosecutors in an attempt to justify continued funding and personal advancement by entrapping the most vulnerable members of our society. We will continue to expose the use of paid informants with extensive criminal rap sheets as they are routinely misrepresented as accidental witnesses rather than amoral leaders highly motivated to create simulated crimes.

We will continue to support those incarcerated simply for others’ political and personal gain.

UBICA gevangenen

Op dinsdag 4 juni werden de 9 arrestanten die werden opgepakt na het verzet bij de ontruiming van het roemruchte kraakpand UBICA veroordeeld tot respectievelijk 4 en 6 weken onvoorwaardelijke geavngenisstraf, met aftrek van hun voorarrest. Daarnaast zijn ze veroordeeld tot een schadevergoeding van 15.000 euro. (Donaties zijn alvast welkom.)

De ontruiming voor leegstand, na 21 jaar kraakgeschiedenis, deed veel stof opwaaien en liet bovenal zien dat de strijd omtrent kraken nog lang niet gestreden is en dat in deze tijden van rechts-populisme het nog kan en meer dan nodig is om een vuist te laten zien en de tanden te ontbloten.

De arrestanten bedanken iedereen voor hun steun, kaartjes, lawaai en soliacties die door het hele land hebben plaats gevonden. Ze maken het naar omstandigheden goed, maar het is natuurlijk altijd eenzaam om achter de muren van de bajes te zitten. Stuur ze daarom een kaartje! Het maakt niet uit of je ze kent of niet, het is altijd fijn om wat te krijgen. Het maakt niet uit wat je schrijft, vertel een leuk verhaal, een mooi boek dat je hebt gelezen of wat je hebt gedaan vandaag. Het is fijn om berichten van buiten te krijgen. Let wel op dat je niks belastend over de ontruiming of iets anders er in zet. Al zijn de mensen veroordeeld er kan nog een hoger beroep volgen!! En ga er altijd vanuit dat de autoriteiten mee lezen!!

Anarchist Black Cross Utrecht biedt directe praktische ondersteuning voor gevangenen en heeft de wil een infrastructuur te bieden voor anderen die willen corresponderen of anderzijds hun solidariteit willen tonen met de mensen achter de muren. Tegelijk stellen wij ons tegen het gevangenis- en strafsysteem van de staat en streven wij naar een socialere en gelijkwaardigere wereld.

ABC Utrecht is onderdeel van het Anarchistisch Kollektief Utrecht en zet zich in voor met name anarchistische gevangenen.

De eerste editie van het nieuwe ABC-magazine ‘Gribus’ is uit! Met dit magazine proberen we het belang van de ondersteuning van gevangenen te tonen en waarom het een integraal onderdeel van de anarchistische strijd zou moeten zijn. In dit magazine belichten we sommige strijdende gevangenen en staan er artikelen in over gevangenis afschaffing en alternatieven voor het gevangenis en criminele ‘gerechtigheid’ systeem. Hopelijk zal het je informeren en inspireren op een bepaalde manier; om te gaan denken en te praten over de afschaffing van de gevangenissen, het schrijven van een gevangene, of zelfs het afbranden een gevangenis.

The First edition of the new ABC magazine callled ´Gribus´ is out! With this zine we try to show the importance of prisoner support and why it should be an integral part of the anarchist struggle. In this zine some individual cases of prisoners will be highlighted along with some writings on prison aboliton and alternatives to the prison system and the criminal ‘justice’ system. Hopefully this zine will inform or inspire you in some way; to start thinking and talking about the aboliton of prisons, writing a prisoner, or even burning down a prison.
