«No one from the group was stabbed with my knife. When the police came,
I saw blood on the knife and said – ‘oh shit, where was I stabbed’.
Because when I was on the ground I saw that the knife was at about a
metre from me and some of the men came and tried to pick it up. The
people who were bodyguards were pushing and stopping them, preventing
them from taking the knife. While I was defending myself, I can’t
remember if the knife was the whole time with me, because I was
distracted. When I was on my stomach, the knife wasn’t on me and the
people were fighting around me and spitting at me, still trying to

J.Palfreeman’s Statement: …
«The conclusions of Sofia City Court are in contradiction to the
sequence of the events. The assertion of the prosecutions is that the
concrete blocks had been thrown after Monov’s death; however on the
footage one can see just the opposite. Leaving aside the impartiality of
Sofia City Court, in their conclusions they have rewritten the events in
a way they have not occurred.

The forensic medical report, which states that Andrey Monov has been
killed with a dagger, is completely ignored by SCC, obviously because it
does not agree with the conclusions of the same court. But why was the
contradictory evidence ruled out, when the facts should have been used
to form those conclusions.

Although SCC has room for interpretation, I believed that the report,
which states that the knife used for the killing of Andrey Monov is not
the same knife I’ve been holding, so I believed, that this report would
be important for the court, however it was rejected as it did not agree
with the conclusions.

The whole spirit of the report and the accusations, if anything is in
contradiction it just gets ignored and left aside, that is why the
conclusions of SCC are so short and inconsistent. There is not one
person who can read it and understand it, it has no sense at all. I gave
the court decision in Bulgarian to a friend of mine in the prison, I
asked him to translate it in English, and he said: “how could I tell you
in English something that doesn’t make sense for me in Bulgarian”.

The group tried to break my head with large concrete blocks – 30 sq. cm.
Everyone, who lives in Sofia, knows what I am talking about, about what
kind of cobble stones, and those cobble stones, which they threw at me,
are still there. All this happened before Andrey Monov’s death. Antoan
Zahariev and Andrey Monov not only took part in the conflict, but the
group itself gave evidence that Andrey Monov and a witness by the
nickname ‘the tall Toni’ have started the attack on the persons from
Roma origin.

I maintain my initial statements, all statements, without the need to
explain any contradictions in them. I support the initial plea of my
lawyer and all the submissions of my father as the arguments they are
talking about still have not been answered. We have not received an
answer from the prosecutor’s office to the arguments we’ve submitted. It
is not a matter of interpretation, when all the objective evidence is
pointing to one thing, and this thing is that I have acted in a defence
of another person, who has been attacked. I have never thought that
anyone will die, except the Roma people, who were attacked, or me. We
were the ones in danger, and we were the ones, who were attacked. This
is all I want to say.»

A few days ago Australian anti-fascist Jock Palfreeman was assaulted in Sofia Central Prison in Bulgaria (he says it was not “too badly”) but yesterday [July 6] the same guard assaulted another prisoner, an elderly man, and some of that man’s compatriots came to his assistance. These seven were then set upon by 40 guards, who brutally beat them.

Jock, in his role of secretary of the Bulgarian Prisoners Association, phoned a number of lawyers to help defend those assaulted. Now Jock has been threatened by the same prison guard has threatened him with another beating.

It is no surprise that not only Jock’s role within the prison with the Bulgarian Prisoners Association but also because of the various days of action for Jock being organised around the globe to highlight his case. A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH ANTIFASCIST JOCK PALFREEMAN, IN BULGARIAN
PRISON FACING REPRESSION

July 7 2014

This is a call for international solidarity with antifascist Jock Palfreeman.
A guard prison hits him (not very badly) some days ago and yesterday the
same guard hits an old man from another country. Some other inmates from the same country defended him and 40 guards hit 7 of them really brutal. Very brutal!

Our comrade Jock Palfreeman have call the lawyers to defend them and now he is threatened that they will beat him badly too. The guard told him that he will come to hit him early in the morning.

Jock Palfreeman is a young Australian who came to visit Bulgaria in December 2007, and has been in Bulgarian prison ever since. One night, in Sofia, Jock saw two young Roma boys being attacked by large group of racist hooligans. He intervened and the racists attacked him with purpose to kill him. Jock in self-defense seriously injured two of his attackers, one fatally. The Bulgarian State and its judicial system decided to protect the racists, their protectors, and Jock was sentenced to 20 years of prison.

While writing, Jock Palfreeman is already more then 5 years imprisoned in Sofia, Bulgaria for aiding two young Romani-boys when they were under attack from a group of right-wing hooligans. Palfreeman came into a fight with the group of fascists and two of his attackers got injured of whom one died later from his injuries.

We start this campaign because, next to the just move of Palfreeman to act, his court case was a total fraud in which he got convicted to 20 years of imprisonment. While in prison his treatment is worsening. One of the reasons for this is his support for other prisoners through the by him co-founded Bulgarian Prisoners Association. In the beginning of 2013 this was reason for depriving him from his right to finish his study in prison by the prison authorities.

In reaction to this Palfreeman started a hunger strike. A few months later (October 2013) there was another incident in which he and fellow prisoners were subjected to severe beatings by prison guards.

Meanwhile the Bulgarian state upholds a pretty picture about human rights, tolerance and its fight against xenophobia¹. Through this the Bulgarian government is trying to present itself as a fitting partner of the o-so-tolerant bourgeois European Union. This same state is keeping Jock Palfreeman imprisoned while he stood up against a form of injustice that everyone should act against.

Everywhere in Europe we see an increase of right-wing and xenophobic ideas. On the wind of the social crisis and in the name of ‘freedom’ and as false saviors of ‘the people’, they are surfing as vultures around the rotting corpse of the capitalist bourgeois democracy. From Poland to Spain, from the Ukraine to Greece they try to win the inhabitants – terrorized by budget cuts and driven into disparity by social demolition by the IMF, the ECB and the EU – for their ideas. They try to put the crisis on scapegoats. Scapegoats like homosexuals, Jews and in many Eastern-European countries the Romani-communities² . This while this specific group is often already living in harsh economic circumstances. It is in this light Jock acted.

There are, when analyzing such mechanics, many complex matters at work. A large part of the Eastern-European countries feels itself – understandably – for years discriminated and neglected. This region is dealing with a torn history of communist dictatorship and after that the trampling by capitalist elites, both ‘pro-Russian’ and ‘pro-European’. Meanwhile there has been a certain racism from West to East. The origins of the social and economic problems these fascist movements point out are disturbing and make clear all the more where the neglecting of an unprocessed history and a tormented past can lead to.

The antifascist struggle and the struggle for a social revolution together are the only path out towards true freedom for all peoples. In the struggle for social justice for everyone it is for its utmost importance to take a firm stance against all forms of discrimination. This way we can prevent, from West to East and also internally, that innocent minorities get the blame on base of their ethnicity, sexuality, social-economic position while we unmask and fight against the true origins of the problem: the international system of nationalism and capitalism; divide and conquer. The people in the front-lines of these struggle need our support.

We designed a poster (in English) to get international attention for the case of Jock Palfreeman and his current situation. This poster is currently being spread widely in Europe (Germany, Austria, Czech, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia). The poster is not only meant to inform the public but also to pressure the Bulgarian state. The Bulgarian state is currently vulnerable because of the attention it receives for the expiration of the need to have a visa in the EU for people with a Bulgarian passport. The Bulgarian state hopes when this works out well it can enter the EU-schengen-zone³.

Next to spreading information through the internet and via posters in the public space, we therefore also call for actions to put up the pressure against the Bulgarian government. They are thus far ignoring and frustrating the release of Palfreeman. Next to the pressure on the government for Palfreeman’s release this can also give him some new hope.

We ask to write the Bulgarian embassies with the demand for the release of Jock Palfreeman, send along posters to make clear the story is on the streets. This is not because we are seeing the Bulgarian state as a legit entity but they are the ones who keep Palfreeman hostage.

Terwijl wij dit schrijven zit Jock Palfreeman inmiddels al meer dan 5 jaar gevangen in Sofia (Bulgarije) voor het helpen van twee Roma-jongens die werden aangevallen door een groep extreemrechtse hooligans. Palfreeman raakte hierop in een gevecht met de groep fascisten en twee van zijn belagers raakten gewond. Één van hen overleed later aan zijn verwondingen.

Wij zijn overgegaan tot het steunen van Palfreeman omdat, naast dat hij rechtmatig handelde door in te grijpen, zijn rechtszaak een regelrechte farce was waarbij hij veroordeeld is tot een celstraf van 20 jaar. Hij wordt steeds slechter behandeld tijdens zijn gevangenschap. Dit onder andere door zijn steun aan andere gevangenen, via de mede door hem opgerichte Bulgarian Prisoner’s Association. Begin 2013 werd zijn recht op het afronden van zijn in de gevangenis hem ontnomen door het gevangenisregime.

In reactie hierop ging hij begin 2013 een maand in hongerstaking. Een aantal maanden later (oktober 2013) volgde weer een incident, waarbij hij en medegevangenen in elkaar geslagen werden door gevangenisbewakers.

Ondertussen houdt de Bulgaarse staat ons een mooi beeld voor van mensenrechten, tolerantie en haar strijd tegen xenofobie¹. Hiermee probeert de Bulgaarse overheid zich te presenteren als een gepaste deelnemer aan de o-zo-tolerante, burgerlijke Europese Unie. Diezelfde staat houdt echter Jock Palfreeman opgesloten terwijl hij opstond tegen een vorm van onrecht waar iedereen tegen zou moeten optreden.

Overal in Europa zien we een opkomst van extreemrechts en xenofoob gedachtegoed. In naam van de ‘vrijheid’ en als valse redders van het ‘volk’ cirkelen zij als aasgieren op de wind van de sociale crisis rond het rottende lijk van de kapitalistische kleinburgerlijke democratie. Van Polen tot Spanje en Oekraïne tot Griekenland proberen zij inwoners – geterroriseerd door bezuinigingen en tot wanhoop gedreven door de sociale afbraak van het IMF, ECB en de EU – voor hun ideeën te winnen. Zij proberen de oorzaak van de crisis af te schuiven op de zondebokken. Deze zondebokken zijn, naast homoseksuelen en Joden, in veel Oost-Europese landen de Roma-gemeenschappen. Dit terwijl deze groep zich vaak al in economisch barre omstandigheden bevind. Het is in dit licht dat Jock Palfreeman handelde.

Er spelen in deze kwestie ingewikkelde zaken door elkaar heen. Een groot deel van de bevolkingen in Oost-Europese landen voelt zich – begrijpelijk – al jaren lang gediscrimineerd en niet gehoord. De regio kampt met een verscheurde geschiedenis van communistische dictatuur en de daarop volgende vertrapping door kapitalistische elites, zowel ‘pro-Russische’ als ‘pro-Europese’. En ondertussen heeft er de afgelopen decennia een zeker racisme van West naar Oost plaatsgevonden. De door deze rechtse stromingen aangewezen oorzaken van de sociale en economische problemen zijn verontrustend en maken duidelijk waar de verwaarlozing van een onverwerkte geschiedenis en een gekweld heden toe kunnen leiden.

De antifascistische strijd en de strijd voor een sociale revolutie vormen samen de enige weg tot werkelijke vrijheid voor alle volkeren . In de strijd voor sociale gerechtigheid voor iedereen is het van groots belang een krachtig standpunt in te nemen tegen de discriminatie in al haar vormen. Op die manier kunnen we van West naar Oost en intern in samenlevingen zorgen dat onschuldige minderheden op hand van etniciteit, seksuele voorkeur of sociaal economische positie niet de schuld in de schoenen geschoven krijgen. Daarnaast kunnen we de werkelijke oorzaak van het probleem ontmaskeren: het internationale systeem van nationalisme en kapitalisme; verdeel en heers. De mensen die zich in deze strijd in de frontlinies bevinden hebben steun nodig.

We hebben een poster ontworpen (in het Engels) om internationaal aandacht te vragen voor Jock Palfreemans verhaal en zijn situatie. Deze wordt op het moment wijd verspreid in Europa (Duitsland, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, Tsjechië, Polen, Finland, Zweden, Noorwegen, Denemarken, Nederland, België, Frankrijk, Spanje, Italië, Servië, Griekenland etc.). De poster is echter niet alleen om het publiek te informeren, maar ook om de druk op de Bulgaarse staat op te voeren. De Bulgaarse staat is momenteel kwetsbaar omdat deze momenteel veel aandacht ontvangt vanwege het verval van de visumplicht voor mensen met een Bulgaars paspoort en de wil van de Bulgaarse staat tot de toetreding tot de EU-schengen–zone².

Naast het verspreiden van informatie via internet en posters in de publieke ruimte, roepen we daarom ook op om met acties de druk op te voeren tegen de Bulgaarse overheid die tot dusver de vrijlating van Palfreeman heeft genegeerd en gedwarsboomd. Naast de pressie voor de vrijlating kan dit, misschien nog belangrijker, ook een sprank nieuwe hoop voor Palfreeman zelf betekenen.

Wij vragen om de Bulgaarse ambassades te schrijven met de eis Jock Palfreeman vrij te laten, posters mee te sturen en duidelijk te maken dat het verhaal op straat te vinden zal zijn. Jock heeft hier zelf om gevraagd. Dit is niet omdat we het instituut van de Bulgaarse staat erkennen als rechtmatig, maar zij zijn diegene die Palfreeman gegijzeld houden.

Als je als individu of groep dit initiatief wilt ondersteunen kun je mailen naar de AGN. We kunnen de posters toesturen, een PDF of webversie digitaal toesturen of wellicht wil je op een andere manier helpen. Ook willen we vragen of om je eigen netwerk te spreken om dit initiatief te steunen zodat we een wijdverspreid effect kunnen hebben.

Vrijheid voor Jock Palfreeman en zijn medegevangenen!

Tijdens een avond uit met vrienden die december was hij getuige van een aanval van een groep van 16 voetbal-hooligans met duidelijk neo-nazistische trekken tegen twee Roma (zigeuner) jongens. Hij greep in en kwam op voor de jongens. Hij probeerde in het gevecht dat ontstond de groep op afstand te houden met een mes , ze vielen hem alsnog aan. Met geen mogelijkheid te ontsnappen heeft hij uit zelfverdediging twee van zijn belagers zwaar verwond, waarvan uiteindelijk één stierf – Andrei Monov.

Deze overleden jongen bleek uit een bekende Bulgaarse familie te komen met politieke connecties. En na twee lange jaren van verdachte rechtszaken met een duidelijke politieke kleuring, werd Jock Palfreeman schuldig bevonden. Hij is veroordeeld tot 20 jaar gevangenisstraf en een boete van 375.000 Australische Dollars voor moord en poging tot moord.

De zaak was enkel gebaseerd op de verklaringen van de neo-nazi’s, welke claimen dat Palfreeman hen zomaar aanviel en hen achtervolgde met de intentie om iemand te vermoorden. Dit terwijl belangrijke en mogelijke getuigen nooit zijn gehoord en dat de camerabeelden van ‘beveligings’camera’s die het voorval hadden gefilmt misterieus verdwenen waren.

Na meerdere verzoeken van de verdediging werd slechts één van de vijf getuigen opnieuw gehoord om uit te leggen waarom ze eerst stelde dat de vechtpartij met de Roma-jongens wel plaats had gevonden, en ze dit later ontkende.

Ondanks het feit dat de rechtbank erkent dat de vechtpartij tussen de groep neo-nazi’s en de Roma-jongens plaats had gevonden, behield de rechtbank haar eerdere lezing.

Vanwege Palfreemans activistisch werk als voorzitter van de Bulgaarse Gevangenen Organisatie – een organisatie die gevangenen helpt met juridisch advies – heeft het hoofd van de Centrale Gevangenis van Sofia, opdracht gegeven om strafmaatregelen te nemen tegen hem. Palfreeman mag zijn voor hem zo belangrijke studie in de gevangenis niet afmaken.

In zijn geval kan hij niet studeren aan een buitenlandse universiteit, maar enkel in een Bulgaarse. Maar als hij aan een Bulgaarse universiteit wilt studeren kan dat niet vanuit de gevangenis. Dus mag hij zijn studie niet afronden.

Vanaf 13 januari 2013 is Jock Palfreeman daarom in hongerstaking gegaan. Hem werd echter een doktor ontzegt wat wederom een repressieve maatregel was van de leiding van de gevangenis. Na 30 dagen van enkel vloeibare dranken en een gewichtsverlies van 20 kg kreeg hij een antwoord. De rechtbank staat hem toe om aanklacht aan te tekenen tegen het besluit van de rechtbank. Palfreeman eindigde hierop zijn hongerstaking en zette zijn strijd voort.

Meer dan een jaar geleden heeft zijn familie een aanvraag ingediend om Jock Palfreeman over te laten plaatsen naar een Australische gevangenis. Dit zou alleen kunnen als Palfreemans vrienden en familie 375.000 dollar zouden betalen in compensatie voor de slachtoffers.

Terwijl de familie akkoord ging om de boetes te betalen eind mei 2013, bezocht de een Australische afgezant de Bulgaarse Openbare Aanklager en de directeur van de gevangenis in Sofia. Hij diende een formeel verzoek in tot de overplaatsing van Palfreeman naar Australië om daar de rest van zijn straf uit te zitten.

Zonder dat de Australische overheid geinformeerd werd, heeft de Bulgaarse Openbare Aanklager echter in de media bericht dat hij de overplaatsing niet zou goedkeuren. Dit om twee redenen. Ten eerste omdat Palfreeman niet genoeg tijd in een Bulgaarse gevangenis zou hebben doorgebracht, en ten tweede omdat hij zich slecht zou hebben gedragen.

De vader van Andrei Monov – de overleden aanvaller – is inmiddels een invloedrijk politicus en heeft in verklaard dat als hij het parlement ingestemt wordt dat hij alles zal doen om te voorkomen dat Jock Palfreeman naar Australië wordt overgepaatst. Meneer Monov is recentelijk tot lid van het parlement gekozen voor de regerende partij.

Het is duidelijk dat Jock Palfreeman hiermee politieke speelbal is geworden in een spel dat van bovenaf gespeeld wordt. En waarbij de feitelijke gebeurtenissen er steeds minder om doen.

Jock Palfreeman is een Australiër die in 2009 werd veroordeeld tot 20 jaar gevangenisstraf in Bulgarije vanwege een gebeurtenis die plaats vond op 28 december in 2007. Jock probeerde twee Roma jongens te beschermen tegen een groep van 15 voetbalhooligans, die een geschiedenis kennen van racistische activiteiten. Nadat de aanvallers zich tegen Jock richtten, probeerde hij zichzelf te beschermen door middel van een mes. Hierbij werd Andrei Monov fataal neergestoken en de anderen geraakten gewond.

Jock werd niet toegestaan om vanuit de Bulgaarse gevangenis te studeren. Hiertegen is hij in januari voor dertig dagen in hongerstaking gegaan.

Meer dan een jaar geleden heeft de familie van Jock een aanvraag ingediend om Jock over te laten plaatsen naar een Australische gevangenis, om daar zijn verdere straf uit te zitten. Dit kan alleen wanneer de vrienden en familie van Jock een door de rechtbank opgelegde schadevergoeding van omgerekend 375.000 Australische dollars betalen aan de ‘slachtoffers’ en hun familie. Aangezien de familie heeft ingestemd met het betalen van alle boetes en schadevergoedingen voor het einde van mei, hebben Australische ambtenaren de Bulgaarse procureur-generaal en de directeur van de gevangenis van Sophia bezocht om eigenhandig de aanvraag voor overplaatsing te overhandigen.

Zonder de Australische regering te informeren heeft de Bulgaarse procureur-generaal in de media aangekondigd dat hij de overplaatsing om twee redenen niet zou aanvaarden: ten eerste omdat Jock nog niet lang genoeg in de Bulgaarse gevangenis heeft gezeten en ten tweede omdat Jock zich zogenaamd slecht zou hebben gedragen. Andrei Monov’s vader is een invloedrijke politicus. Hij heeft verklaard dat wanneer hij zou worden verkozen als parlementslid, dat hij dan alles in het werk zou stellen om de overplaatsing van Jock naar Australië te verhinderen. Kort geleden werd meneer Monov verkozen als parlementslid van de heersende partij.

De schrijfavond voor Jock vind plaats op 25 september in de Klinker (van Broeckhuysenstraat 46, Nijmegen) vanaf 20.00 na het soepcafé.

On the 25th of september there will be an ABC writing evening for Jock Palfreeman.

Jock Palfreeman is an Australian, who was in 2009 convicted to 20 years in Bulgarian prison for the event that occured on December 28th, 2007. Jock was trying to protect 2 roma boys from a group of 15 football hooligans, who have a history of racist display. After the attack turned against him, he tried to protect himself with a knife, fatally stabbing Andrei Monov and slashing another.

Jock has been not allowed to study from Bulgarian prison, so this January he spent 30days on a hunger strike.

Over a year ago his family filed a request for Jock’s transfer to an Australian prison, which could only happen if Jock’s friends and family pay the price that the Bulgarian court ordered to pay in compensation to his victims and their families, which is around 375,000 Australian dollars. As the family has agreed to pay all the fines in the end of May, Australian officials visited the Bulgarian Prosecutor General and the Sofia Prison Director to hand deliver the formal request for Jock’s transfer to Australia to serve the rest of his sentence.Without informing the Australian Government the Bulgarian Prosecutor General announced in the media that he would not approve of the transfer for 2 reasons; one being that Jock has not spent enough time in Bulgarian prison and two, that Jock has behaved badly. Andrei Monov’s father is an influental politician and he stated that if elected to parliament, he would do everything to prevent Jock’s transfer to Australia. Mr. Monov was recently elected a member of Parliament in the ruling party.

The writing evening for Jock will take place on the 25th of september at the Klinker (van Broeckhuysenstraat 46, Nijmegen) at 20.00 after the soup café.
