Through the costly transport of goods for our customers, we are all massively contributing to climate change. Streaming
You are likely benefiting too: from January to March 2019 alone, Germans over 14 years streamed around 1.2 billion hours of films and series on the Internet. Many use Netflix and Amazon Prime because it’s convenient – some may use it because it seems more environmentally friendly. But streaming services require a lot of electricity. To stream movies, series and songs online, data must be stored on servers. And these servers need power: According to SWR, the network infrastructure in Germany consumes about 55 TWh per year. To provide the electricity for this, you need about ten medium-sized power plants. By the way, one third of this power goes to air conditioning systems. They have to cool the data centers to about 25 °C so that they do not overheat. Of course, not only streaming services are part of the network infrastructure, but they make up a large part of it: Global data traffic consists of 80 percent video data. The files are particularly large and therefore also consume a lot of space on servers and a lot of energy during transmission.
In 2018 alone, video streaming has caused more than 300 million tons of CO2 equivalents. This is equal to the amount that the entire country of Spain emits in one year. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, emissions have increased dramatically. Two other figures illustrate the extent: in general, streaming causes a whole percent of global CO2 emissions, or 20 percent of all greenhouse gases caused by digital technology.

To ensure your comfort, we have to record who wants what and when at your front door. In the USA, the police and security authorities can gain access to the individual cameras relatively easily, which makes us proud and serves your security.
 
At the same time, Alexa gives us access to private conversations in many households, which are recorded and analyzed. In the past, there have been repeated data leaks and unauthorized access by the German secret services. We are sincerely sorry about this, because we would like to have the data only for ourselves and to decide ourselves how to pass it on. US secret services already have access to any data collected by Amazon.
 
With the Amazon “language assistant” Alexa, most users associate a female name and a female voice. Always listening, friendly and submissive, “she” executes almost all commands. Hereby Amazon reproduces and strengthens a stereotypical image of women. Even with sexual demands “she” keeps a friendly tone. Alexa’s submissiveness is not surprising, since the principle of command and execution is already ingrained in computer science, which is still a largely male-dominated field of work today. 60 percent of the women working in Silicon Valley reported having experienced sexual harassment in their work environment. Amazon & Corona
Due to the pandemic, many people have retreated into their apartments and houses in recent months (if they are so privileged to have their own housing). As a result, Amazon has grown enormously in several business areas and Jeff Bezos is one of the biggest winners of the pandemic. However, in order to be able to continue to offer our services in the same way, we don’t have that much left for the workers who are on the other side of this development.
