Running on these servers are for example Netflix, Amazon, Apple Services, Instagram, Spotify, Airbnb, Soundcloud, Dropbox, Telegram, Twitch, Twitter, Shell and many others.
Amazon is the world’s largest provider of so-called “cloud services”. We manage an incredible amount of data on our servers, collected by companies and authorities. In particular, we also provide video surveillance with identity and route recognition for private companies and public authorities. Cloud services offer data center services via the Internet: from hard disk storage to virtual servers and higher software functions. In the last three years, an increasing number of services related to “artificial intelligence” (AI) have been offered. This technology can therefore be used on a large scale with little previous knowledge.

Our partner and landlord Edge-Technologies consider themselves “a developer of healthy intelligent buildings”. With their supposedly sustainable and climate-neutral construction projects, they combine data collection of the Internet of Things (IoT) and data processing of Big Data in their Smart City architecture. The construction of the building requires huge amounts of cement, rare earths and so on. But machine learning (AI) and cloud computing are supposed to improve the energy footprint and utilization of a building and the productivity of its users. The aim is, for example, to optimize the (human) workplace in such a way that people are less likely to take sick leave.
Together with Google and Microsoft, we are the driving force behind the smart homes and offices. Smart City advocates are striving for a universal collaboration of technology, science, real estate developers and other companies transforming cities through the introduction of IoT and smart technologies. The inhabitants of these cities have little choice but to adopt these technologies. Urban planners and government authorities will be enabled to be more aggressive with transformation programs. It remains open what these transformation processes include, how they affect people and who profits from them. But don’t worry, we have good ideas!
In general, a smart environment can collect an incredible amount of very personal information about us. If everything around us records even the smallest detail and this data is evaluated on a large scale, data protection is hardly possible. Human behavior can thus be analyzed and manipulated on a large scale. This is the ultimate low price for endless comfort and total security!
Edge likes to refer to the planned Smart City Toronto “which was built from the Internet”. Here a smart city district was planned (by Google’s Sidewalk Labs) on the drawing board. The advertising brochures speak of heated sidewalks, traffic lights that adapt to the traffic, better waste sorting, etc. Critics of this project in Toronto consider the collection and use of data to be an advanced form of surveillance capitalism, where the main purpose is to manipulate people in the interests of business. Due to massive criticism, Google abandoned the project in Toronto for the time being. Fortunately, Edge-Technologies will take up the ideas and continue them!

Everyone should go where they culturally belong – except our specialists, of course. That’s why Amazon Cloud AWS (Amazon Web Services) provides services for the US foreign intelligence agency CIA and some homeland security and police agencies in the US. With JEDI we are currently applying for the largest service contract in the history of the Pentagon. Here, methods of Machine Learning will be integrated into the data processing of the US military. We have already sold facial recognition “Recognition” to several police and border patrol agencies in the USA, including the inevitably racist migration authority ICE. This enables surveillance cameras to match even large crowds of people with millions of digitally captured faces and identify people in virtually real time. The German Federal Police also use AWS to archive video and audio recordings taken with so-called body cams in action.
Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon and now the richest man in the world with over 100 billion, is committed to control and surveillance and is keen to support the CIA and NSA with the latest developments.
 
Amazon’s home surveillance technology “Ring” features a smart doorbell with motion sensors and video. This enables the remote monitoring of your front door. To ensure your comfort, we have to record who wants what and when at your front door. In the USA, the police and security authorities can gain access to the individual cameras relatively easily, which makes us proud and serves your security.
 
At the same time, Alexa gives us access to private conversations in many households, which are recorded and analyzed. In the past, there have been repeated data leaks and unauthorized access by the German secret services. We are sincerely sorry about this, because we would like to have the data only for ourselves and to decide ourselves how to pass it on. US secret services already have access to any data collected by Amazon.
 
With the Amazon “language assistant” Alexa, most users associate a female name and a female voice. Always listening, friendly and submissive, “she” executes almost all commands. Hereby Amazon reproduces and strengthens a stereotypical image of women. Even with sexual demands “she” keeps a friendly tone. Alexa’s submissiveness is not surprising, since the principle of command and execution is already ingrained in computer science, which is still a largely male-dominated field of work today. 60 percent of the women working in Silicon Valley reported having experienced sexual harassment in their work environment. The former entertainment director of Amazon Roy Price was also suspended for sexual harassment.
