Hundreds Rise Against ‚Roma Crime‘ in Bulgaria

Several hundred people have joined the parade against what they believe is widespread Roma crime in Bulgaria on Saturday.

The gathering of the protesters took place in front of the National Palace of Culture in downtown Sofia and continued through the Vitosha boulevard, Darik radio has informed.

It was the far-right Bulgarian National Union that organized the rally. According to the Bulgarian National radio, some 1500 people attended it.

The „contra-parade'“s organizers had called for a peaceful protest, one that would exclude drunk citizens and racist slogans. No accidents have been reported during the rally.

Tensions in Bulgaria were sparked by the September 23 murder of Bulgarian youngster, Angel Petrov, 19, who was deliberately run over by a minivan, driven, according to witnesses, by one of the relatives of notorious Roam boss from Katunitsa, Kiril Rashkov AKA Tsar Kiro. The murder led to massive protests of the ethnic Bulgarians in the village, where Tsar Kiro’s mansions are located. They culminated Saturday night into the burning of Rashkov’s properties by football hooligans from Plovdiv, which is near to Katunitsa, and by football club fans from the capital Sofia and the southern city of Stara Zagora.

From Monday to Thursday night, protests followed in many major Bulgarian cities, including the capital Sofia. Nearly 350 people in total were arrested by the police after the two nights of rallies that involved what has been perceived as ethnic hatred.

Bulgarian authorities have frozen Rashkov’s assets and property while he is investigated on tax evasion charges, the revenue agency has confirmed. Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Kalin Georgiev told the morning broadcast of Nova TV channel Wednesday that Rashkov, AKA Tsar Kiro, has been arrested. On Friday the Regional Court in the town of Asenovgrad decided to keep Rashkov behind bars.

Roma Pride: Marches take place in European cities

Roma Pride marches took place yesterday in several European countries. Several hundred persons convened in the afternoon in Paris for a celebratory assembly to demonstrate the dignity of the Romani people as well as the migratory nations of Europe. A similar event in the center of the Romanian capital of Bucharest was attended by about 300 people.

Agence-France Presse reports that the historic Roma Pride demonstrations also took place in Bulgaria, Denmark, Italy, Norway, and Turkey. In Sofia, Romani boys and girls distributed flowers to passers-by in order to reduce the current tensions between ethnic Bulgarians and Romani people there.

Roma Pride events in Paris and other European metropolises demonstrated pride in the Romani nation primarily through Romani music performances. The events also condemned „the racism and discrimination suffered by individuals considered Romani“. The co-organizers of the pro-Roma demonstration in Paris, such as the SOS Racisme organization and the French Union of Romani Associations (Ufat), took advantage of the opportunity to express their demands that freedom of movement be respected for all Europeans and that caravans be legally recognized as housing units. Bulgaria swept by anti-Roma protests

Mobilized by Facebook posters which successfully evaded anti-hatred censorship on the Web, thousands of masked pro-nationalist youths marched through central Sofia Saturday to demand that the Bulgarian authorities take tough action against Gypsy-bred crime. Police in full riot gear stood by but did not intervene. Fortunately, officers prevented the marchers from reaching Sofia’s Roma-populated neighbourhoods. The Bulgarian Roma leader Tsvetelin Kynchev had advised Sofia Gypsies to stay indoors at the time of the march.

Bulgaria’s latest wave of anti-Roma unrest started on September 23rd after a posh car driven by the Gypsy mafia boss Kirill Rashkov hit and killed a 19-year-old ethnic Bulgarian boy named Angel Petrov in an incident near Plovdiv. Adding insult to injury, Rashkov immediately issued threats against the family of the dead youth. Rioting erupted, in which radical youths attacked Roma houses and clashed with police. Hundreds, including Rashkov, are now being held.

Antiziganismus – Solidarity with Czech Roma

Am 01.Oktober 2011 demonstrierten Einwohner_innen aus Nordböhmen auf dem Palacký-Platz in Prag. Dazu hatte Lukáš Kohout aufgerufen. „Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, gegen „verkehrte Diskriminierung, Untätigkeit der Regierung und Roma-Kriminalität“ zu demonstrieren. Gleichzeitig fand eine Veranstaltung von Gegendemonstranten statt, die gegen die „rassistischen Aufhetzer“ aus Varnsdorf ein Zeichen setzen wollten. Beide Gruppen mussten von der Polizei auseinander gehalten werden, es kam nur zu verbalen Auseinandersetzungen.“, so die Meldung von romove.radio.cz
Für den darauffolgenden Tag kündigte Kohout Demonstration in Rumburk und Varnsdorf an. In Rumburk folgten den Aufruf etwa 50 Menschen, deutlich weniger als noch eine Woche zuvor. Anschließend starteten wenige Teilnehmer_innen der Anti-Roma-Demonstration nach Varnsdorf, dort war für 14 Uhr eine Kundgebung angemeldet. An dieser beteiligten sich etwa 200 Menschen, hauptsächlich ortsansässige Bevölkerung. Im Gegenzug zu den vergangenen Wochen nahmen augenscheinlich nur wenige organisierte Nazis teil. Circa fünf, dem rechten Spektrum zuzuordnende Deutsche wurden ausgemacht. Auf der Kundgebung sprach erneut Lukáš Kohout.

200 Slovak Roma citizens protest at president’s palace

Some 200 Roma citizens gathered in front of the presidential palace in Bratislava on September 21, holding flags of the Roma Union Party and expressing their dissatisfaction with the way the Slovak government is handling their problems, the TASR newswire reported.

„Iveta Radičová [Slovak Prime Minister] said she would put an end to our social allowance payments, but we want to get higher allowances for the poor people living in the [Roma] settlements,“ said one of the demonstrators, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

The protest was organised by Bratislava activist Alojz Hlina, who in a short speech said that if the current problems of the Roma population are not dealt with urgently they could escalate into much bigger protests.

Rumänien: Hoffnung für Roma in der Cantonului-Straße in Cluj-Napoca

Der Gerichtshof von Cluj-Napoca hat das Verlangen der Nationalen Eisenbahngesellschaft abgewiesen, die Romasiedlung am Rand von Cluj-Napoca zu demolieren.

Wie bereits auf dieser Homepage berichtet, leben 450 Roma der Cantonului-Straße am Rand von Cluj-Napoca mit der Gefahr einer Zwangsvertreibung. Die Nationale Eisenbahngesellschaft (CFR) AG, Bukarest, erhebt Ansprüche auf das Grundstück und will, dass die Häuser demoliert werden. Der Gerichtshof von Cluj-Napoca hat das Verlangen der Gesellschaft abgewiesen. Die Roma NGO CRISS, die Arbeitsgruppe der Civil Organisations (gLOC) und Amnesty International begrüßen diese Entscheidung.

Der Gerichtshof muss diese Entscheidung auch schriftlich festlegen. Dann kann CFR in erster Instanz diese Entscheidung anfechten.

Wir sind voller Hoffnung, allerdings kann sich die Situation noch ändern und Entscheidungen können umgestoßen werden. Wir hoffen, demnächst mehr berichten zu können.

Police Bust More Than 100 in Bulgaria for Violence in ‚Roma Protests‘ Night

More than 100 people in total have been arrested by the police in several Bulgarian cities after a wave of small-scale but vigorous rallies Monday night.

The protesters rallied against the murder of 19-year-old Angel Petrov in the village of Katunitsa by associates of notorious Roma boss Kiril Rashkov, aka Tsar Kiro – but also because of the „Roma issue“, i.e. what they see as a „privileged situation“ of the Roma minority in Bulgaria.

Bulgarien in Pogromstimmung

Wie ein Autounfall eine landesweite Hetzjagd gegen die Minderheit der
Roma auslösen konnte

Am vergangenen Wochenende brannte[1] im südbulgarischen Katuniza ein
aufgebrachter Mob Häuser und Autos der Minderheit der Roma nieder.
Seitdem drohen rassistisch motivierte Demonstrationen[2] und mitunter
gewalttätige Proteste[3], die in etlichen Ortschaften in Bulgarien
stattfinden, in eine landesweite Welle von Pogromen[4] gegen diese
marginalisierte Minderheit umzuschlagen.

Was war geschehen? Am Freitag, den 23. September, verstarb der
Jugendliche Angel Petrov bei einem Autounfall in dem südbulgarischen
Dorf Katuniza. Der Minibus, der den 19-jährigen Dorfbewohner überfuhr,

Heftige Krawalle: Bulgaren jagen Sinti und Roma aus Dorf

Im bulgarischen Dorf Katunitsa kam es in der Nacht zum Sonntag zu den schwersten Ausschreitungen in Bulgarien seit Jahren. Nachdem ein 19-jähriger Dorfbewohner durch Sinti und Roma bei einem Verkerhsunfall tödlich verletzt wurde, brannten ein aufgebrachter Mob Häuser nieder.

Antiziganismus in Varnsdorf, Erlebnisse

Hier ein subjektiver Bericht zur Situation in Varnsdorf, der sich vor allem mit den ganz persönlichen Eindrücken einer Person beschäftigt, die seit letzten Samstag in der Region ist um die aktuellen Ereignisse zu beobachten. Persönlicher Bericht Tag 17. und 18.09. in Varnsdorf

Es ist mein zweiter Tag in der Nähe des sogenannten Schluckenauer Zipfels, jenem nord-tschechischen Gebiet das zur Zeit wöchentlich zum Schauplatz antiziganistischer Demonstrationen wird. Den Brennpunkt bildet dabei ganz klar das Städtchen Varnsdorf mit seinen 16000 Einwohner*innen. In dem Örtchen, das so nah an den deutschen Ortschaften Seifhennersdorf und Großschönau liegt, dass mensch jeweils über die Grenze spucken kann, projizieren die Anwohner*innen ihre prekären Lebensumstände auf die örtliche Roma-Bevölkerung. Seit einem längeren Zeitraum bieten Immobilienmakler Romahaushalten in größeren Städten den Umzug gegen eine Entschädigung in unbedeutende Orte am Rande oder in den Provinzen Tschechiens an. Die passiert meist, nebenbei gesagt, scheinbar oft zu meist weit schlechteren Mietkonditionen am neuen Wohnort. Auch in Varnsdorf gibt es neben einer Vielzahl normaler Wohnungen in denen die roma-stämmige Bevölkerung lebt, auch zwei Wohnheime die nur von Roma bewohnt werden. Zum einen das ehemalige „Hotel Sport“ (Privateigentum) in dem 20 Erwachsene und 42 Kinder/Jugendliche leben und zum anderen ein weiteres, städtisches Wohnheim.
