Anti-Roma demonstration takes place in Duchcov

Some 500 people demonstrated Wednesday in reaction to a Roma attack on a young married couple in mid-May and some of the participants headed for the Roma-inhabited houses, but the police barred their way and the event organisers called on them to disperse.

The police have accused five Roma attackers of causing a heavy bodily harm. The court has not complied with the proposal that they be taken into custody. The demonstration was called by three Duchcov inhabitants under the title Meeting of Dissatisfied Citizens. „We do not know what to expect from various people. I am afraid that there will be no space for discussion Wednesday,“ mayor Jitka Bartova said before the meeting. One hour ahead of the demonstration local Roma also met to pray for the public peace. „It always requires two to brawl,“ an attending priest said.

Several Roma attacked a young married couple in the night of May 18. The police said the attack was preceded by an attempted theft of a bicycle, in which its owner was injured. Afterwards the same assailants attacked the married couple returning from a disco. They kicked them and beat with fists.

Mord an Rom in Teplice – erneut rassistische Medienberichterstattung gegen Roma

Verschiedene Medien, u.a.

Czech Republic: Anti-Romani march on Hitler’s birthday is a fiasco

Yesterday’s attempted march against Romani people in the Předlice quarter of Ústí nad Labem can be described as an enormous fiasco. The demonstration, convened by Josef Bareš on the 124th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birth, was attended by one person. However, it has cost the state and the taxpayers no small amount of money, as about 70 police officers were deployed to the radical event.

„Police measures are necessary, you never know if it might be a pretext for something else,” one of the police officers present told the Ústí regional daily. “It can always happen that suddenly one or two busloads of radicals show up.”

The organizer called the demonstration a “March against Inadaptables” (Pochod proti nepřizpůsobivým). The announcement to the local government lists the place of the demonstration as Předlice. According to a Facebook invitation featuring the logo of the Workers’ Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti – DSSS) and many crude expressions, the event was supposed to have started at 13:00 at the Západní train station and was supposed to have passed through Tovární and Hrbovická streets to Školní square and back before ending at 14:30. In reality the event ended after just 15 minutes and only Bareš was there.

In his announcement of the event to the local government, Bareš expected 100 – 120 participants to attend. However, only one person confirmed his attendance on Facebook prior to the event, and even he did not show up, leaving Bareš alone at the scene.

The Konexe civic association is criticizing the relevant town representatives for not informing the residents of Předlice about the planned march with sufficient advance notice. „The town of Ústí nad Labem has once against chosen a maximally paternalistic strategy. The town leader decided not to inform the Romani residents of Předlice, the targets of this hate march, that it would be happening – why scare Romani people unnecessarily in advance when they won’t understand it anyway? The result of this is that trust in the town leadership and majority-society institutions has fallen to an historic low in Předlice,” representatives of Konexe said.

„The Romani community did not find out about this march until Friday evening. Local residents did not have enough time to decide what to do should anti-Romani demonstrators show up in front of their buildings. At moments of time pressure and great stress, advocates of short-sighted solutions and hotheads often gain the upper hand,” Miroslav Brož of Konexe told news server Romea.cz. „If the relevant authorities had the information that very few people would be attending the march, they should have shared that information with the residents. The situation would not have been as stressful for them as it was with no information.”

Kein Platz für Roma

Kein Platz für Roma from Sebastian Heidelberger on Vimeo.

Eine Reportage aus Tschechien.

The deal in misery

Iveta Jaslová stands with her back against the wall in her flat in Czech Ústí nad Labem. In a few hours she has to leave the building. ”I am scared of losing my children. I don’t know what to do” says the 45 year old Roma. The police wants to evict her and her four daughters and 13 grandchildren from her flat.
The resitential manager hired by the company Czech Propert Investments charget too much rent for the appartments. Iveta and her family had to pay twice as much as Czech citizens are paying for flats in a way better condidition. Now the company has to decorate the building. They decided to throw the residents out of the building instead. ”We don’t want such people here” says the speaker of the company Michaela Winklerova.
The landlords don’t want Romas in their buildings. The prejudices – they are dirty; they would steal and destroy the facilities – are wide spread. Social flats are rare. The few landlords in the north of the Czech Republic who offer flats for Roma take advantage of their sorrow. They charge high rents for flats in an unacceptable condition.
Eventually the police decides not to evict the building. Czech Property Investments cuts off the water and electricity supply. Many families already left the building. Iveta and their children are going to stay one more night in their appartment. Where they will stay tomorrow is yet uncertain.

Czech prisoner amnesty releases racist assailants and extremists

The amnesty announced yesterday by Czech President Václav Klaus will release several infamous Czech extremists from serving their conditional sentences. Amnesties have also been granted to perpetrators of brutal racist attacks, such as the one committed against Romani people in Nýrsko and the attack committed by a former DSSS (Workers‘ Social Justice Party) candidate against a Moroccan citizen in Rožmitál. According to preliminary estimates by the Czech Justice Ministry, the number of prisoners covered by the amnesty totals 6 876. That number might still change.

The Czech Justice Minister has pointed out that the release does not concern anyone who has been remanded into custody for prosecution. Previously he stated that the terms of the amnesty covered prisoners who had been given sentences of one year or less and that it should therefore most frequently apply to perpetrators of felony obstruction of official decisions and perpetrators of petty property crimes, such as shoplifting. MfD: Court acquits 13 suspected of attack on Roma

Thirteen Czech ultra-right extremists suspected of attacking three Romanies have been definitely acquitted by the appeals court, which said it was impossible to prove who of them committed the crime, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes yesterday.

The appeals court upheld the lower-level court’s acquittal verdict, which was appealed by the state attorney, MfD’s east Bohemian supplement writes, citing the appeals court spokeswoman.
The suspects attended a demonstration of the ultra-right Workers‘ Party of Social Justice (DSSS) in Novy Bydzov, east Bohemia, last year.
After the demonstration, they attacked a trio of Romanies whom they beat in their faces and kicked them, the state attorney said.
One of the victims suffered a head injury and lost consciousness.
Citing the judges, MfD writes that the police failed to gather enough evidence and made mistakes when questioning witnesses.
Some suspects asserted that the Romanies attacked them first, while others said they could not remember anything, or refused to testify or said they appeared on the site of the incident by sheer coincidence.

Czech police errors result in acquittal of neo-Nazis who assaulted Romani men

An appeals court in Hradec Králové has rejected the appeal of state prosecutor Alexandr Pumprla in the case of Romani men who were beaten up in Nový Bydžov last year and has left intact the acquittal handed down by the district court. „The reason was lack of evidence. The blame primarily lies with police, who performed the suspect identification procedure poorly,“ David Oplatek of the In IUSTITIA organization, told news server Romea.cz.

Oplatek believes the principle of a speedy trial was violated throughout the entire procedure because the justice system left the victims in uncertainty for a long time. „The entire criminal proceedings took a year and a half, during which the district court was unable to deliver its verdicts for almost a year,“ Oplatek said. The decision of the appeals court has already taken effect.

The district court absolved the alleged assailants of the charges of rioting and defaming a creed, nation, or race. The rioting consisted of beating up two Romani men when the extremists marched through the town after a demonstration by the Workers‘ Social Justice Party (DSSS), and the defamation was performed through shouting racist slogans such as „You black gypsy swine“.

The DSSS promoters were not found innocent, but were acquitted. Judge Karel Peřina said during his previous explanation of the district court verdict that there was no doubt that the crimes described in the indictment took place, but it had not been proven which defendant(s) committed them. Tschechien: Roma-Familien droht Zwangsvertreibung

Czech town issues ban to keep order, local Roma protest

Roma from Krupka Monday criticised a newly issued decree, under which people must not sit on the grass or steps in some parts of the small Czech town, and they want to stage a protest against the ban on September 5.

„Benches were removed from our housing estate and our kids have nowhere to play, they have no playground. There was money only for a camera system to monitor us,“ said Josef Miker, one of the local Roma who plan to organise the protest.

„We believe it is an attempt to drive Roma from the streets or make life difficult for them and make them leave Krupka,“ Miker said.

The decree bans people from bringing tables, benches and chairs as well as barbecues to the streets and parks-like areas of the town’s central square and its two housing estates.

It was approved in late June to keep the town calm and tidy.

Krupka Mayor Zdenek Matous said the decree was issued because locals complained about loud music and fires made in public areas. He added that Roma were among those who filed the complaints.

„None of the decent people should mind the decree,“ Matous said.

Krupka has become known due to suspected vote buying in the 2010 municipal elections. The elections were abolished twice as a number of poor locals, mostly Roma, were paid for casting their votes and supporting a given political alliance. Some critics of the elections then indicated that Matous was behind the corruption.

Only the third elections held last autumn were successful. Matous defended his post in them.

Far-right groups repeatedly organised marches and meetings criticising Romani crime in Krupka.

In spring 2011 the police dispersed a Romani crowd that wanted to block the way for an extremist march heading to their housing estate. The extremists then highlighted a case of an underage boy beat up and raped by two Romani youths in the area two years ago.
